Return to Sport

Return to Sport Safely, Strongly & with Confidence

Whether you are returning after a muscle injury, ligament injury, surgery, or a period away from sport, we help you progress through each stage of recovery so you can return safely and perform with confidence.

Return to sport is the structured process of progressing from injury recovery back to full participation in training and competition.

After an injury, your strength, mobility, coordination, fitness, confidence, and ability to tolerate physical load may all be affected. Returning too quickly can increase the risk of aggravating the original injury or developing another problem.

At Advanced Physio & Sports Injury LTD, we use progressive rehabilitation to help rebuild your physical capabilities and prepare you for the specific demands of your sport.

Our approach progressively prepares your body for the physical and psychological demands of your chosen activity.

1. Return-to-Sport Assessment
We assess your current strength, mobility, movement, balance, fitness, confidence, and functional ability to understand what you need to work on before returning to sport.
2. Strength & Conditioning
We progressively rebuild strength, stability, endurance, power, and physical capacity to help your body tolerate increasing levels of activity.
3. Functional Rehabilitation
Exercises are progressed to replicate the movements and physical demands you will experience during your sport.
4. Sport-Specific Training
Where appropriate, rehabilitation incorporates activities such as running, jumping, landing, changing direction, acceleration, deceleration, or other sport-specific movements.
5. Progressive Return to Training
We help you gradually reintroduce training, increasing the intensity, volume, and complexity of activity as your recovery allows.
6. Return to Competition
The final stage focuses on ensuring you are physically and mentally prepared to return to full competition and perform with confidence.

  • Improved strength and physical capacity
  • Better movement quality and control
  • Improved confidence when returning to activity
  • Gradual and structured progression back to training
  • Better preparation for sport-specific demands
  • Reduced risk of re-injury
  • Improved physical performance
  • Greater understanding of your body’s capabilities
  • Support with returning to full competition

Our goal is to help you return to sport not only recovered, but prepared for the demands placed on your body.

How do I know when I am ready to return to sport?
Being pain-free is only one part of recovery. Your strength, mobility, movement, physical capacity, confidence, and ability to tolerate sport-specific demands should also be considered.
Can I return to training before I am fully recovered?
In many cases, a gradual return to modified training can form part of the rehabilitation process. Your physiotherapist can advise you on what activities are appropriate at each stage.
Will I need specific return-to-sport tests?
Depending on your injury and sport, your physiotherapist may use functional assessments and performance-based exercises to help determine whether you are ready to progress.
How long does it take to return to sport?
Recovery times vary depending on the type and severity of your injury, your previous fitness level, and the demands of your sport. We focus on your individual progress rather than rushing you towards a specific timeframe.
Can you help me return after surgery?
Yes. Return-to-sport rehabilitation can form an important part of recovery following many types of orthopaedic surgery, helping you progressively rebuild strength, movement, confidence, and physical capacity.
