Cerebral Palsy (CP) is a neurological condition caused by damage to the developing brain before, during, or shortly after birth. It primarily affects movement, muscle tone, posture, and coordination, although symptoms and severity vary from person to person.

Neurological physiotherapy plays a vital role in helping individuals with Cerebral Palsy improve physical function, maintain mobility, reduce muscle stiffness, and maximise independence. Through targeted exercises and functional rehabilitation, physiotherapy supports long-term health, participation in everyday activities, and overall wellbeing.

As Cerebral Palsy is a lifelong condition, physiotherapy is often an ongoing process that adapts to changing needs throughout childhood and adulthood.

Our rehabilitation programmes focus on improving movement, independence, and quality of life.

1. Comprehensive Neurological Assessment
We assess mobility, muscle tone, strength, flexibility, balance, posture, coordination, and functional abilities to develop a personalised treatment plan.
2. Individualised Rehabilitation Programme
Using evidence-based neurological physiotherapy techniques, we create a programme designed to improve movement quality, physical function, and independence.
3. Strength & Mobility Training
Targeted exercises help improve muscle strength, joint mobility, flexibility, and endurance while encouraging more efficient movement patterns.
4. Balance & Coordination Rehabilitation
We use functional exercises to improve balance, stability, coordination, and confidence during everyday activities.
5. Functional Skills Training
Treatment focuses on improving daily activities such as walking, standing, transferring, climbing stairs, and participating in school, work, sport, or recreational activities.
6. Education & Long-Term Support
We work closely with individuals, parents, carers, and families to provide education, home exercise programmes, and ongoing support to encourage continued progress between appointments.

Can physiotherapy help people with Cerebral Palsy?
Yes. Physiotherapy is one of the most important treatments for Cerebral Palsy, helping improve mobility, strength, balance, coordination, and independence while supporting long-term physical health.
Is physiotherapy only for children with Cerebral Palsy?
No. Adults with Cerebral Palsy can also benefit greatly from ongoing physiotherapy to maintain mobility, manage muscle stiffness, improve strength, and reduce the impact of ageing on their condition.
Will my treatment programme be personalised?
Absolutely. Every person with Cerebral Palsy has different abilities and goals, so each rehabilitation programme is individually tailored.
Can physiotherapy improve walking?
Yes. Walking, balance, posture, and movement efficiency are common areas we focus on, helping individuals move more safely and confidently.
Do I need a GP or consultant referral?
No. You can book directly with our neurological physiotherapy team without needing a referral.
